'R.S.V.P.' is French for 'Réponde, s'il vous plaît,' which means literally, 'Respond, if it pleases you.' You will see this at the bottom of a formal invitation, such as to a black-tie event or a wedding. Because sometimes people are not good about responding, now you will sometimes see 'Regrets only,' which means you only have to reply if you can't come. Each letter is pronounced separately, not as one word.
Example:
-Did you R.S.V.P. for your cousin's wedding?
-Yes, I mailed it yesterday.
I love analyzing my native language, American English, and helping non-native speakers make sense of it. I've been doing this for fun with friends who speak English as a second language for nearly 30 years. I would like to first thank A.D., C.F. and E.A., and now P.G., for inspiring me to finally write this stuff down!

Road trip
A 'road trip' is a trip in a car often taken by young people to get to a vacation in another city, such as a trip taken during Spring Break. Sometimes the trip itself can also be the vacation. Road trips often involve squeezing as many people as possible into a car, driving as long as absolutely possible (even all night), eating at cheap restaurants and staying in cheap hotels.
Example:
-I think we should go to Daytona for Spring Break.
-Road trip! I'm in!
